Art will be the theme of OST100 for the month of February

On and Off Fredericksburg Studio Art Tour, along the Fredericksburg Road OST corridor February 8, 9 & 10, will become the model we share with other communities to promote art and artists along their local OST corridors. http://www.onandofffred.org/      More below signature block.

Mary Bonner was the artist for the 1920s OST Association. Reply to this e-mail to get instructions to view her studio during the weekend of February 8, 9 & 10.

Hannibal Pianta (concrete artist for Jefferson HS, Majestic, Aztec & Empire Theaters) had his studio at 300 Fredericksburg Road as the OST was becoming paved.  A self-driving tour of his home, studio and local works will be posted on http://www.oldspanishtrailcentennial.com/ during February.

The Woodlawn Theater, OST100 model to other communities for theater restoration, is presenting Taming of the Shrew February 1, 2, & 3 and Grease beginning February 15. http://www.woodlawntheatre.com/

A self-guided two day tour of artist studios and galleries
"on and off" Fredericksburg Road
in San Antonio, Texas

February 9 and 10, 2008.

The mission of “On and Off Fredericksburg Rd.” is to embrace and promote the work of diverse visual and cultural artists, enhance the appreciation for the arts in the community, and stimulate neighborhood revitalization.

The On and Off Fredericksburg Rd. Studio Tour weekend kicks off at Bihl Haus Arts on Friday evening, February 8, 6:00-9:00 pm with the not-to-be missed On and Off Fred Autograph Party.  On exhibit are works of art from each of the 40+ artists on the tour. (Most of the works on display are reproduced in our 52-page full color catalog ($5), available at The Koffee Kup, 1025 Donaldson.)  At the Party, you’ll be able to meet the artists—they’ll be available to autograph copies of the catalog--and to mingle with local notables, enjoy libations and delightful hors d'oeuvres, and listen to the rhythmic jazz of Bobby Natanson. This event is free and open to the public, so please bring your friends! On hand will be artists who live and work in the Monticello Park, Jefferson, Woodlawn Lake, Los Angeles Heights/Keystone, and Beacon Hill Neighborhoods.

LOVING PRAYERS ARE SENT FORTH FOR OUR OST COLLEAGUE JANE GAITAN AND HER FAMILY

We are writing this to inform anyone who does not know that Jane Gaitan's husband, Edward passed away pretty suddenly on Monday morning. Included are the links to the obituary and for the American Diabetes Association, for those of you who would like to make a donation in his name.  For those who have heard the news, thank you so much for all your prayers and support. Hopefully some of you will be able to make it to the funeral Friday morning, or the rosary Thursday evening. Details can be found on the obituary page. Please forward this e-mail to anyone you think should be notified.

Thank you so much,

Joanna Lilly and Olivia Gaitan  (Jane's daughters)

OST100 is working closely with BEXAR TRAILS cycling advocacy group as we promote the building of our 50-mile Bexar County section of the 3000-mile off-road OST Hike and Bike Trail.  Cycling components are included in the Streets, Parks and Community Initiatives Bond lists.

Friends of OST100,

This past winter a dedicated group of folks created a Scenic Loop - Boerne Stage Road Alliance to find ways to preserve the natural beauty of the outer end of what was once known as the San Antonio Scenic Loop driving route.  They have moved forward with the help of the Bexar County Historical Commission,  County Commissioner Larson's,  and State Representative Leibowitz's offices to prepare a bill now in the State Legislature giving Texas Counties the authority to create historic roadways.  If this bill passes, Commissioners Court  is prepared to make the Scenic Loop-Boerne Stage Road corridor the first Bexar County Historic Roadway.  The Boerne Stage Road portion is part of the Headquarters Section of the Old Spanish Trail auto highway.

Dixie Watkins has graciously made his architecture website available for folks wanting to send notes of support to the Scenic Loop - Boerne Stage Road Alliance. The letter can be found at the bottom of the LINKS index on http://www.dwiiiassoc.com/. This is an opportunity for you to help with Centennial Preparations of the OST.

You are invited to bring your laptop to help create new materials as we sit around Marianna Jones' dining room table OSTuesday,

MayOSTuesday will be a worksession reviewing http://www.oldspanishtrailcentennial.com/.  We would appreciate it if you could reply to this e-mail telling us in what way you use the website. We are now receiving nearly 100 visitors daily, so know that someone is reading the materials.  It would help make the site more effective if each of you would take a few minutes to tell us your favorite (and your least favorite) topic on the site;  what needs clarification or updating and any thoughts you may have about new items that would be helpful in telling the OST story.

OST100 is in the process of creating a partnership with the American Volkssport Association.  Our first event, the Easter Walk organized by the Hill Country Volkssportverein, altho' a cold rainy day, was a wonderful success as far as the warm reception their club gave us as we shared OST information with their walkers.  We will take OST materials to the Camp Verde HOME OF THE CAMELS Walk sponsored by the Kerrville Trailblazers, Saturday, May 5, 2007.  Join us during the day to help with the OST booth, try the 10K walk, or just to enjoy the historic Camp Verde General Store and park.  Map to Camp Verde, times and volkssporting information is in the flyer available on http://www.walktx.org/KerrvilleTrailblazers/

As Centennial Preparations continue we will be encouraging the OST100 groups in other communities to participate with their AVA Clubs.  These partnerships will be of great support in helping create the 3000-mile OST Hike and Bike Trail to be completed in time for the 2029 Grand Finale of OST Centennial Celebrations.

Come join the fun,
